Commons Dance Festival 2023
May 23, 2023Artistic Director Kamala Devam will be performing her solo “Less of Me” at the 2023 Commons Dance Festival tomorrow night at Stanley Arts in Croydon, South London. She’ll be featured in a mixed bill of South Asian dance works curated by Akademi called “Elemental: Forces of Nature”.
Kamala choreographed “Less of Me” in San Francisco in 2015 and since then the solo has had many incarnations, featuring in her first company evening in 2016 and national UK tour in 2018. She has re-choreographed parts to reflect her present journey as a dancer for this show, but the core meaning of the piece still remains: Post organ-removal surgery, she reflects on the space she has inside her now and the uncertainty of her life’s course in the face of a new space for possibility. Kamala uses bharatanatyam gesture and spoken text in this contemporary dance work, set against the music of indie rock band alt-J.
