‘CENTRICA’ Research and Development 2020

June 12, 2020

In January, KDC received funding from Arts Council England and commissioning support from Warwick Arts Centre and Akademi South Asian Dance UK to research and development a new company ensemble piece entitled ‘Centrica’. Hosted by a residency at the University of East London, Artistic Director Devam worked with a fierce, international cast of dancers to see how the languages of Bharatanatyam, acrobatics, Western contemporary dance and the Indian martial art kalaripayattu could be used to explore the impact of centricity on our lives, asking “can life function without a centre?” and “how do centric perspectives prevent us from connecting with each other through our humanity?” Music and movement for the piece was inspired by the Fibonacci Sequence, which recurs mathematically throughout nature to unite much of science and art. Sections of the work were shown to an invited audience, followed by a Q&A with Devam and the dancers, finishing with audience feedback.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, we plan to continue Centrica’s plans for final creation in Spring 2021 with a UK tour in Autumn 2021. Watch this space!
